We decided to make Diwali much brighter and happier by celebrating it with the children from Prem Sadan, a girl’s orphanage in Malad.
We conducted a frame making workshop for which the kids were divided into a group of four. One Kshana member/volunteer was assigned to each group to help them out. It was barely any time before the kids finished making their picture frames. Their faces gleamed as they proudly clicked pictures with their shiny fishy frame.
The next on our list of activities was our bag making competition where the girls put their creative skills to test. Phew!!! It was a lot of hard-work! The girls came up with such brilliant ideas for their bags and they stitched so well (it kind of put our stitching skills to test
). Once they were done they danced around from one part of the room to another to admire each others bags. The bags were beautiful and so well made that one would find it a little hard to believe that those small girls had made it.
After all that hard-work we headed downstairs for a round of ‘4 corners’ which was a complete laugh- riot with all the kids and Kshanites rooting for their respective teams.
After that the kids gave a dance performance on ‘Jai Ho’, ‘Nagada’ and ‘Desi girl’. Quite a few of us learnt a few dance steps from them
and then all of us dance together non-stop for more than an hour or so. It was one of the best moments from the event where everyone had constant smiles on their faces.
It was dinner time by the time we got done with the dancing. We had a special Diwali dinner comprising of salad, puris, chole, pulao, kadi and chocolate cake for the kids. Once they finished relishing their meal, we gifted board games, badminton rackets, carom board, and basketballs to the girls.
We also gifted them lots of saplings and pots as a special Diwali present instead of firecrackers. We also explained to them the importance of giving back to nature – instead of polluting the environment.
We announced the 3 talented winners of the bag making competition and handed over their gifts to them.
It was time to go. We hugged the kids and waved them goodbye.
This Diwali was very special indeed… there weren’t any lights or fireworks in the sky but we managed to light the face of every girl at Prem Sadan with a huge smile J J J
